Objective

The international INTERPHONE-Study initiated by WHO has been carried out in 13 countries, including Germany, using a standard protocol. The main hypotheses of the international study are whether the exposure to high frequency electromagnetic radiation from various sources increases the risk of brain tumour and whether the use of mobile phones increases the tumour risk. As 7500 patients with glioma, meningioma or acoustic neurinoma were included in the study, the detection of a small risk will be possible. All basic data (interviews with patients and controls as well as tumour diagnoses and localisation) of the single studies in each country were provided to IARC for a pooled analysis. The estimation of RF-exposure in INTERPHONE Study subjects is a very important and critical step which is now partly funded by the German Mobile Telecommunication Research Programme.
