International Research

The biological effects of high frequency electromagnetic fields on human health has been examined intensively for the last 50 years. Findings from this research form the basis of current limit values. So far, national and international assessments carried out by radiation protection boards on the effects of electromagnetic fields on health have shown that health risks to the population cannot be scientifically proven as long as the exposure levels are below such limits . At the same time, indications exist for potential biological effects that may occur from exposure to fields with intensities below the limit values. However, the questions about underlying mechanisms, relevance to health and, in many cases, scientific validity has not been resolved, despite numerous international research projects.

With the focus on “effects on humans and animals”, potential biological effects will be described on the basis of multidisciplinary scientific publications and scientifically assessed by the BfS (Federal Office for Radiation Protection) by analysing available literature. Furthermore, the heading “social aspects” highlights mobile communication as social area of conflict.

Social aspects

Over the last few years, mobile communication has increasingly found its way into many areas of private and public life and has, in parts, extensively contributed towards their design and change. ...
